Eric de Kuyper, één van de grondleggers van de Vlaamse danskritiek, las op vraag van Sarma de anthologie 'Dans op Expo 1958' die recent werd gepubliceerd op onze website. In 1958 was hij zelf 16 jaar en toen al gebeten door dans, film, musical, opera, theater... Geplaagd door herexamens kon hij echter niets meepikken van de vele dansvoorstellingen op de Wereldtentoonstelling. 50 jaar later heeft hij de schade meer dan ingehaald en is hij als geen ander in staat om de verdiensten en de manco's van die periode te plaatsen. Welke rol speelde de Expo in het ontstaan van zoiets als een Belgische danscultuur? Waarom waren de critici vol lof over de opkomende ster Béjart en konden zij het werk van Martha Graham nauwelijks waarderen? Hoe zien we de expo-ideologie weerspiegeld in de danskritiek? Wat was de esthetiek van die tijd en wat getuigde van 'mauvais goût'? Waarom volhardden de Belgische critici in een scherp onderscheid tussen hoge cultuur en entertainment wanneer zo veel Amerikaanse choreografen vlotjes de theaterzaal inruilden voor Broadway of Hollywood, en vice versa? Eric de Kuyper kadert het denken van de generatie '58 binnen een historisch, politiek en esthetisch perspectief. Hij geeft hen krediet, maar legt ook de pijnpunten bloot waar de volgende generatie critici hen zal aanvullen of corrigeren.

De video lecture wordt getoond op Blauwe Plekken #O58, een parcours van dansperformances op het Kiel in Antwerpen. Drie hedendaagse choreografen (Lu Marivoet, Eric Raeves en Marc Vanrunxt) laten zich inspireren door de woontorens van Renaat Braem en door het vooruitgangsgeloof dat aan de basis ligt van deze modernistische architectuur. Benieuwd of we dat idealisme van toen - dat zich uitte in de architectuur maar ook in de dans(kritiek) - nog terugvinden in het werk van choreografen die op zoek gaan naar gevoelige plekken in de stad...

De dansperformances van BLAUWE PLEKKEN # O58 sluiten aan bij enkele andere stadswandelingen georganiseerd door cityLabo binnen het kader van de herdenking van Expo 58. De performances gaan door op zondag 28 september en 5 oktober, telkens van 15u tot 17u. De video lecture van Eric de Kuyper is gedurende heel de week doorlopend te zien in het ontmoetingscentrum NOVA, waar ook een plannetje van het parcours en een programmablaadje kan worden opgehaald.

De video lecture is een productie van Sarma die werd gerealiseerd door Eric de Kuyper, Staf Vos, Pablo Castilla, Myriam Van Imschoot en Kristien Van den Brande. Voor het maken van de video kreeg Sarma de steun van Blauwe Plekken.

Anthologie 'Dans op Expo 1958'

De anthologie 'Dans op Expo 1958' werd samengesteld door de historicus Staf Vos, de theaterwetenschapper Lieve Dierckx en Sarma. Een dertigtal sleutelteksten over dansvoorstellingen op de Expo werden geherpubliceerd op onze website, samen met een omkaderend essay van Staf Vos. Naar aanleiding van de Wereldtentoonstelling konden critici als Marcel Lobet en Georges Sion voor het eerst hun ideeën over dans en ballet kwijt in populaire dag- en weekbladen als Le Soir en Les Beaux-Arts. Ze ontpopten zich tot specialisten in de dansgeschiedenis, zij het met een ambigue kijk op moderniteit, lichaamstaal en internationale cultuur. Een belangrijk stukje dansgeschiedenis, waar nog weinig onderzoek naar gebeurde, wordt hiermee ontsloten.

In 2003 stelde Sarma al een anthologie samen over het werk van Eric de Kuyper, met een specifieke focus op dans, musical en lichamelijkheid. Meer informatie over hem en zijn oeuvre is te vinden op onze website.

# VOORUITBLIK #

Sarma werkt op dit moment aan twee anthologieën rond het werk van Rudi Laermans en rond het werk van Pieter T'Jonck. Op 20 februari geeft Rudi Laermans een performance lecture in Vooruit over muziekdramaturgie, in samenwerking met de muzikant Burkhard Stangl.

Eric de Kuyper, one of the founders of dance criticism in Flanders, was asked by Sarma to read and comment upon the anthology 'Dance at the Brussels World Fair 1958', recently published on our website. Sixteen in 1958, he was already passionate about dance, film, musicals, opera, theatre... Examinations prevented him from attending the, at that time, unique presence of dance performances from all over the world at the World Exhibition in Brussels. During the 50 years that followed he has more than made up for this lack and in 2008 he has a privileged view on the merits and the shortcomings of that time. How did the World Exhibition help to create such a thing as Belgian dance culture? Why did critics praise the upcoming star Béjart and why didn't they appreciate the work of Martha Graham? How was the Expo ideology crystallized in dance criticism? How to describe the aesthetics of the time? What was denounced as 'mauvais goût'? Why did Belgian critics persist with the sharp division between high culture and entertainment which so many American choreographers had abandoned in retrieving the theatre from Broadway and Hollywood? Eric de Kuyper puts the writings of the 1958 generation into historical, political and aesthetic perspective. He gives the critics credit but also lays bare their deficiencies.

The video lecture will be shown at Blauwe Plekken #O58, an outdoor event with dance performances by Eric Raeves, Lu Marivoet and Marc Vanrunxt at Kiel in Antwerp. The dance performances are inspired by the modernist social apartment complexes constructed by Renaat Braem, and the belief in progress expressed by them. Can we still trace the idealism of '58 - found in the architecture but also in dance(criticism) - in the work of contemporary choreographers who look for precarious and fragile places in the city?

Blauwe Plekken #O58 is organized in collaboration with cityLabo, who have composed several walks through Antwerp to commemorate Expo 58. The dance performances take place on September 28 and October 5, each time from 3pm to 5pm. The video lecture by Eric de Kuyper can be seen continuously from September 28 to October 5 at NOVA, where a city map and a program leaflet can also be found.

Anthology 'Dance at the World Exhibition 1958'

The anthology ‘Dance at the World Exhibition 1958’, realized by the historian Staf Vos, the writer Lieve Dierckx, and Sarma, is a selection of more than 30 key texts about dance performances at the Expo, and can be found published on our website, together with an introductory text by Staf Vos. At that time it was possible for critics like Marcel Lobet and Georges Sion, for the first time, to spread their ideas about dance and ballet in popular magazines such as Le Soir and les Beaux-Arts. These critics revealed themselves to be true connoisseurs of dance history; however, their views on modernity, the body, and international culture were ambiguous. With this anthology Sarma opens up a very important part of dance history - many aspects of this period have not been investigated thoroughly.
